Israel looks for Gazan spys; drops thousands of leaflets over Gaza

Gaza - Ma'an - Israeli airplanes dropped leaflets calling for Gazans to inform the Israeli military of the whereabouts of projectile launchers in return for aid and assistance.

The papers were found by the thousands all over Gaza Friday morning, and bear the signature of the Israeli military forces.

The leaflet reads:

Dear people of the Gaza Strip,
Bear the responsibility for your fate!

The Projectile launchers and the terrorist elements pose a threat on you and your families.

If you wish to provide help and assistance to your people in the sector, call the number below to provide us with the needed information.

The future of the massacre is in your hands
Don’t hesitate!

We will be glad to receive any information you have and it is not necessary to give us your personal information.

We will keep it as a secret.
Call us at the following number:
02-5839749
Or e-mail us at:
Helpgaza2008@gmail.com

To provide us with any information on the terrorist factions.

Note: To protect your safety we ask you to be secretive when you call us.

Head of the Israeli defense forces.

Israel has used similar tactics on several occasions, most recently during their 2006 war in Lebanon and earlier in 2003 during an attack on the West Bank. The fliers are meant to shake the civilian population and crush the spirit of the ‘home front.’

Israeli military personnel have also cut into broadcasts on the Voice of Al-Quds radio station in Gaza and broadcast announcements to Gazans on air that convey the same message as the leaflets.

At the same time the Al-Qassam Brigades, affiliated with Hamas, were able to cut into Israeli military radio channels and broadcast statements in Hebrew warning soldiers from entering the Gaza Strip.

Further Israeli Leaflet Drops on Gaza as ground operations begin
« Reply #1 on: January 03, 2009, 11:58:14 PM »
From the Chicago Tribune, January 4, 2009
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/chi-gaza-israeljan04,0,7697578.story

...As the ground operation began Saturday night, columns of infantry and armored forces crossed into Gaza in several locations after artillery batteries shelled border areas, apparently to detonate explosives and mines planted in the way of the invading troops. There were first reports of clashes and casualties from both sides, but none could be immediately confirmed.

Israeli airstrikes continued as the ground invasion got under way, and a hit on a gas depot sent a tremendous ball of flame into the sky. Tracer bullets cut through the dark and the sound of shelling could be heard as the Israeli forces made their initial advance backed by helicopter gunships. Israeli Navy boats shelled Hamas positions on the coast.

The army dropped thousands of leaflets in some areas warning residents to evacuate their homes. The leaflets said that because of "the activity of terrorist groups" the army was "obliged to respond quickly and work from inside your residential area."

From DefenseNews:
5 January 2009

...IDF sources said the Air Force dropped 400,000 leaflets since the beginning of hostilities warning people of pending attacks. Additionally, the Shin Bet security service actually telephoned residents of specific buildings and apartment blocks, giving them up to 15 minutes to leave the area.

From Deutsche Presse-Agentur:

...The DP-A correspondent [in Gaza] also found a leaflet in his yard, dropped by an Israeli helicopter. He was unsure when the leaflet was dropped and said it could have fallen in his yard before Monday.

'To the residents of the area, because of the terrorist actions that terrorist elements are carrying out from the areas where you live against the State of Israel, the Israel Defence Forces are obliged to carry out an immediate response and act inside the areas where you live, so for your safety you are asked to evacuate this area as soon as possible,' said the leaflet printed in flawless in Arabic.

From the International Herald Tribune, January 5, 2009:

In Gaza City ...residents' telephones rang repeatedly with recorded Israeli military messages saying, "We are getting rid of Hamas and we will use still other means to do so."

Leaflets dropped from airplanes said, "Hamas is getting a taste of the power of the Israeli military after more than a week and we have other methods that are still harsher to deal with Hamas. They will prove very painful. For your safety, please evacuate your neighborhood."

A Palestinian joker calls the IDF

This recording is floating around the blogosphere of an apparently humorous call by a Palestinian to the IDF phone line publicised in the Israeli leaflets recently airdropped on Gaza.

IDF drops leaflets over Gaza, warning of impending attack
By Haaretz Service

http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1054539.html

The Israel Defense Forces said it is making every effort to prevent civilian deaths during its current operation in the Gaza Strip.
The army has continued its policy from the Second Lebanon War of dropping leaflets over civilian areas notifying them of their intent to bomb the area.

The IDF dropped leaflets on Gaza City on Saturday, amid heavy aerial bombing, warning of a wider offensive.

"The IDF [Israel Defense Forces] is not working against the people of Gaza but against Hamas and the terrorists only," the leaflets said in Arabic. "Stay safe by following our orders."

On Sunday, it dropped additional leaflets urging Gaza residents to report the whereabouts of Hamas fighters, even providing a phone number to call.

"You can call the numbers listed below to inform us about the locations of rocket launchers, warehouses, tunnels and terrorist groups operating in your area, said the leaflet, promising confidentiality guaranteed."

Still, a Palestinian medical official said that most of the 21 Gazans killed Sunday were noncombatants, including four members of one family killed when a tank shell hit their home near Gaza City.

The army, meanwhile, says Hamas fighters are wearing civilian clothes
and endangering civilians by operating out of heavily populated residential areas.

Israel's Gaza war extends into psychological realm

Israel's Gaza war extends into psychological realm

By PAUL SCHEMM – 11 January 2009

JERUSALEM (AP) — At first it didn't seem unusual when the faces of the Hamas leadership turned up on the group's TV network. But then they were shot down, one by one, while a message warned that Hamas' time was running out.

Even as Israel's armor and foot soldiers push into the Gaza Strip in an effort to stop militants from launching rockets into Israel, the war is also being waged with psychological operations designed to sap morale on both sides.

Over at Islamic Jihad's Voice of Jerusalem radio station in Gaza City, broadcaster Kamal Abu Nasser said that at least once an hour, the Israeli military also breaks into his signal and broadcasts messages blaming Hamas for everyone's problems.

Hamas, for its part, said it has broadcast messages on Israeli military walkie talkies threatening to kidnap and kill Israeli soldiers. The army said it had no information on such transmissions.

The fate of Sgt. Gilad Schalit, who was captured by Hamas-linked militants in 2006 and whose whereabouts remain unknown, is repeatedly evoked in broadcasts and statements by Hamas, which has several times has threatened to nab more Israeli soldiers. Hamas tried to spread rumors that it had captured several. At least one actual attempt failed, the military said.

Israeli military spokesman Brig. Gen. Ilan Tal said he would not comment on Israel's psychological operations.

"If we're talking about psychological warfare, we have to learn from what Hamas is doing," he said. "We expect Hamas to intensify and increase those sort of rumors (of kidnappings) as the situation gets more critical."

Hamas' ruses extend into the battlefield as they try to combat Israel's overwhelming military advantage.

Military spokesman Maj. Avital Leibovich told The Associated Press that Israel's forces have found Gaza's neighborhoods to be riddled with booby traps, including mannequins placed at apartment entrances and rigged to explode when the soldiers approach.

Israel's army formed a psychological operations unit three years ago, though its initial efforts in the 2006 Lebanon war were largely restricted to drawing satirical cartoons of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and dropping them as leaflets over southern Lebanon.

More chilling at the time for Beirut residents, however, were the strange phone calls they received during the war telling them that their woes were due to Hezbollah and they should turn against the guerrillas.

That particular technique has reappeared in the current Gaza onslaught, with phone calls and leaflets telling Gazans that their problems were due to Hamas. The leaflets include a phone number and e-mail address to call in tips about the whereabouts of militant leaders and weapons caches.

Ephraim Kam, the deputy director of Tel Aviv University's Institute of National Security Studies, said the role of psychological operations loomed large in this offensive, more so than in the past.

"I think we did this in former wars, but in this case we had a lot of time, relatively speaking, and so much more emphasis was given to psychological warfare," Kam said.

Lacking resources, Hamas' psychological efforts have been largely restricted to the propaganda broadcasts on its own Al Aqsa TV channel, including Hebrew language messages asking Israelis to "choose between a peace that gives us back our rights or a war that will smash you down."

There have also been reports of threatening text messages sent to the inhabitants of Israel's southern towns telling them to hide underground because Hamas is coming for them.

The biggest weapon in Hamas' psychological bottomnal is also its best known actual weapon — the homemade rockets it sends on erratic paths into southern Israeli towns. During the conflict, militants have also used longer-range Grad rockets, hitting cities that used to be out of range.

The thousands of rockets have only killed only a handful of Israelis, yet life across Israel's south has been paralyzed.

The greatest disinformation coup of the conflict so far, however, came right at the beginning of the offensive when Israeli bombers caught hundreds of Hamas security men inside their compounds.

The day before a massive Israeli airstrike, Israeli military radio channels broadcast talk of a "lull" and pulled troops back from the border.

Israeli defense officials now say it was a psychological warfare tactic or a "con" to lure Hamas fighters out of hiding.

Associated Press writers Ian Deitch in Jerusalem, Ben Hubbard in Ramallah and Ibrahim Barzak in Gaza City contributed to this report.

...Israel had dropped thousands of leaflets over the city Saturday warning of a wider offensive. New leaflets fell from the sky Sunday urging residents to report the whereabouts of Hamas fighters and providing a phone number to call.

"Confidentiality guaranteed," the message in Arabic promised.
