Afghan Taliban raises war cry on Quran burning
Friday, September 10, 2010, 9:52 (IST)

Kabul, Sep 10: As expected, Tablian has raised a war cry over the Quran burning plans of the Florida church on the ninth anniversary of the Sep 11, 2001 attacks.

The Taliban in Afghanistan has distributed handwritten leaflets south of Kabul with information on the Florida pastor, Terry Jones' plans to burn the Muslim holy book on Saturday, Sep 11.

Although the Reverend Terry Jones announced Thursday, Sep 9 that he has canceled his controversial plans to burn copies of the Muslim holy book, the Taliban has already used the minister's protest to advance its cause, reported CBS News, which has obtained some of the leaflets.

"To defend blessed Quran and righteous Islam and your religion, join our track and go for taking revenge of the holy Koran," the leaflets read.

The leaflets were distributed on the backs of motorcycles to small villages in Paktia province, in the southeast part of the country.

Earlier this week, top US commander in Afghanistan, General David Petraeu had warned Jones against holding the book burning as it would endanger American troops.

Warnings, words of caution and requests against the controversial 9/11 memorial plans of the Dove Outreach World Center in Gainesville came from several spheres.

The Pastor, who managed to maintain his stand despite these pleas, on Thursday, Sep 9 dropped the book burning after an appeal from Pentagon.

However, Reverand Jones has made it clear that the event was not cancelled but only suspended as he felt that a Muslim leader made a false promise on moving the controversial Ground Zero mosque.
