Another Gurkha veteran in need of our help

Lance Corporal Gyanendra Rai (Rtd) fought at Wetherhill, Bluff Cove, in the Falklands, during the 1982 conflict with Argentina.  He was a member of "B Company" in the 1st Battalion, 7th Duke of Edinburgh's Own Gurkha Rifles.

On 11 June 1982 during an Argentinean artillery attack on his Company's entrenched positions, Lance Corporal Rai was near fatally wounded when a 6 cm by 2 cm piece of shrapnel slammed into the left side of his back.  He also sustained shrapnel wounds to his right shoulder. Two other Gurkhas were also seriously wounded by the Argentine artillery fire. Lance Corporal Rai nearly bled to death, as he lay critically injured at Bluff Cove.  However, through the courageous efforts of his comrades in the British Army, Lance Corporal Rai was eventually carried by army ambulance to  the Field Hospital at Fitzroy, where he received life saving surgery (involving massive blood transfusions and skin and muscle grafts).

However, despite having spilt his blood fighting alongside our troops in the Falklands, the British Embassy in Kathamandu, Nepal has told Lance Corporal Rai that he cannot live in the UK as he does not have "strong ties" with this country.  Having served in the British Army for 13 years, this brave Gurkha is now poverty stricken and cannot get adequate medical treatment at his home of Nepal.  It is also scandalous that Lance Corporal Rai is not eligible for a British Army pension, despite an "exemplary" service record, because he was retired from army service just 2 years short of the 15 years required to receive his Gurkha pension.
